It has been reported that most of those impacted will be workers employed with the bakery team as the brand looks to have goods baked outside the supermarket.
According to The Grocer, roles at Tesco Mobile and the company’s head office will also be cut.
Matthew Barnes, chief of Tesco UK said: “These are difficult decisions affecting our colleagues, but we believe they are necessary to enable us to invest in what matters most to our customers.
“Our priority is to support impacted colleagues, and we will do everything we can to help them find alternative roles within our business. Today, we have almost 1,000 vacancies available.”
This comes after the firm recorded record-breaking sales over the Christmas period.

Despite these good figures, the grocery brand has said it wants to make around £500 million in savings this year so it can avoid passing cost rises onto customers.
Rival chains Sainsbury’s and Morrisons have also announced similar job cuts with the former saying it would get rid of 3000 head office roles and axe patisserie, bakery, rotisserie and pizza counters in some of its bigger stores.
Morrisons announced that it would be cutting 200 roles across customer service employee engagement and payroll.
