A tourist in Cancun shared a funny video online to show others what the weather is like there in January.
Lorena Cruz posted a video on TikTok of rain pouring down in the Cancun Hotel Zone in Benito Juarez, Mexico which is a popular area for hotels, resorts and holiday rentals. Cancun is a city in Mexico with a tropical climate so it is mostly warm and sunny.
It seems Lorena chose the wrong time to take a holiday there as the wet season is from May to October, according to travel agent Thomas Cook. At the beginning of her video, the TikTok user wrote: “POV: You’re going to Cancun to get a tan in the middle of January.”
She then moves the camera around to show the storm with heavy rain flooding the whole floor of the hotel resort. Hilariously, she added an audio in the background of the video of a person crying while saying “my savings, my savings, my money!”
The eight-second clip has garnered 276,000 views, 4,205 likes and more than 100 comments. It has also been shared more than 1,000 times, further spreading awareness of the current weather conditions in Cancun.
One TikTok user commented: “Typical of Cancun and its unstable climates hahahah, tomorrow you’ll see it will be sunny (I live here).” Another resident said: “I live here and since June I feel like it rains every week haha but last year it hardly rained at all.”
A third user added: “I thought it only happened to those who thoughtlessly went in October. I don’t feel so bad any more.”
A different user who said they also went to the Mexican city in October claimed they “got hit” by a hurricane. Another user joked: “The worst date. You weren’t planning on getting a tan hahahaha.”
Lorena replied: “Hehehe actually it only rained that day in the afternoon, the other days the weather was good.”
The Met Office states that Cancun’s tropical climate “means it has both a wet and a dry season but the temperature all year around (is) 30 °C.” It adds: “The sea temperature is at its hottest between September and October which also means that the hurricane risk is greater during that period.
“Cancun’s warm sea temperature makes it a popular destination for fans of water sports. November to April is Cancun’s dry season so expect prices to be at their peak during this time.”
Cancun is known for its beaches, resorts and nightlife. The city offers a range of water activities, including, diving, fishing, snorkeling and parasailing. Just don’t expect the weather to be sunny 100% of the time!
