England Men’s Physically Disabled team have finished runners-up in the PD Champions Trophy after a 79-run defeat to India in Tuesday’s final in Sri Lanka.

India won five of their six group matches to top the four-team table and book their place in the final against England, then dominated their opponents in Colombo to win the first international trophy of 2025.

Opener Yogendra Bhadoria scored 73 from just 40 balls, including five maximums, as India – batting first – showed immense strength to post a mammoth 197-4 from their 20 overs.

Jordan Williams (0-26) and Alex Hammond (2-30) were the pick of the England bowlers as they tried to retain control, while Liam O’Brien finished with 2-39 as India scored freely throughout their innings.

England lost opener Anthony Clapham first ball as Radhika Prasad (4-19) impressed, with the contest all-but over when Callum Flynn’s side were reduced to 66-6. Hammond made 35 to ensure the deficit was not more painful, but India eventually bowled them out for 118 in the final over.

Thomas calls time on England career

England wicketkeeper Liam Thomas has announced his retirement from international cricket, having been a stalwart of the England Men’s PD team for over 10 years.

Flynn said: “It wasn’t to be today. India proved too strong and showed their class, but we gave it everything we have and I’m really proud of how we’ve performed over here in Sri Lanka.

“I’d just like to pay tribute to Liam Thomas, who has shared with us all that he’s retiring from international cricket. Liam has been a fantastic servant to English cricket, and to disability cricket in general, and we’ll miss him.

“He’s given everything for nearly 15 years and he can be so proud of his time in an England shirt.”

When is the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy?

The 50-over competition returns to the international calendar for the first time since 2017, with Pakistan staging a global cricket event for the first time since co-hosting the 1996 World Cup with India and Sri Lanka.

The 2025 tournament is set to mirror the format used in 2017, with eight sides split into two groups of four. Each team plays the others in their pool once, after which the top two advance to the semi-finals.

Defending champions and hosts Pakistan are in Group A alongside Bangladesh, India and New Zealand, who they play in the opening game of the tournament in Karachi on February 19.

Group B is comprised of Afghanistan, Australia, England and South Africa, with England’s first match seeing them face old rivals Australia in Lahore on February 22 ahead of an unmissable contest between Pakistan and India on February 23 in Dubai.

The semi-final winners will then contest the final on March 9 in Lahore, where they will bid to get their hands on the Champions Trophy and an iconic white jacket.
