Sarabande Foundation has set up shop in Selfridges’ Oxford Street, London flagship until 23 March with its concept store and gallery dubbed House of Bandits.
This is showcasing a variety of “limited edition and special products, as well as an exciting programme of talks, artist workshops, VIP events, and more”.
Although Sarabande is more about art than fashion, the residency includes items such as a shirt by Thom Browne, a T-shirt featuring a design by Jake Chapman and a limited-edition sweatshirt by Sarabande alumnus Craig Green.
And of course, Sarabande’s key fashion connection is that it was founded by Lee (Alexander) McQueen in 2006 as a place where artists from all disciplines could thrive in an egalitarian creative environment. It was named after his SS07 show and he also left the majority of his estate to support creative and visionary talent.
So far, the charitable foundation “has nurtured more than 200 artists and designers) — actually 280 of them from 38 countries — “and supported tens of thousands more through a pioneering public programme of events”.
So what of the Selfridges space? The gallery and concept store feature work created by its artists and designers and it has also taken over three of the store’s windows. Inside, there are working studio spaces featuring Sarabande artists and designers in rotation with visitors able to speak to them about their work and creative process.
As well as the fashion items, the offer includes art, craft, jewellery and sculpture from many of the creatives with all sales proceeds directly supporting the foundation and its artists.
