Around 100 low traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs) have been introduced across London in a bid to reduce vehicle traffic in favour of walking and cycling.
But some residents living in these areas complain about an increase in congestion and travel times.
Campaigners from 15 community groups have grouped together to voice their opposition in a letter to Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander.
They said: ‘Local authorities often impose LTNs without local community support — in many cases after public consultations showing that two thirds or more wanted them removed. This has eroded trust in local government.
‘Until now we have campaigned separately against badly designed and socially unjust LTNs in our local areas.
‘We are now joining forces to urge the government to introduce a strict regulatory framework for both new and existing traffic management schemes, to ensure that local authorities do not disadvantage groups with protected characteristics, such as the disabled, and cannot implement or maintain schemes that do not have community support.’
The Piccadilly London Underground line has been suspended between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge since before Christmas.

Today TfL said: ‘We are working as quickly as possible to repair the damaged motors to enable a full service to be restored by late January.’
It added: ‘The Piccadilly line will continue to be suspended between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge until late January 2025. A reduced service between Acton Town and Rayners Lane will remain in place during this period.’

At Custom House DLR station, artificial intelligence analyses CCTV footage for signs of objects other than trains on the rails.
If there is, staff are alerted so they can stop incoming trains and save the life of a person who has fallen or jumped on to the tracks.
This could even prevent trains from being derailed, and it may be rolled out further this year.
Mayor Sadiq Khan revealed this in response to a question about former Home Secretary Lord Blunkett falling through gap between a District line train and Westminster’s ‘death trap’ Tube platform.
He said: ‘TfL will trial new technology in 2025, including artificial intelligence systems, which will improve customers safety at the interface between the train and the platform edge. TfL is prioritising this work over the coming year.’
