A TikTok video has gone viral, sparking intrigue about an unusual tradition aboard cruise ships. The footage, posted by user @allcruising, who documents life aboard budget cruise ships, reveals a quirky and potentially eyebrow-raising phenomenon involving pineapples and cruise cabins.
The video begins with the person behind the camera walking around a cruise ship hallway, while explaining that when passengers place a pineapple sticker outside their cabins, it’s a sign that they are swingers – individuals or couples who engage in consensual sexual activities with others outside their primary relationship -, looking for interactions with strangers.
After a few seconds, into the frame comes a door with a sticker of a pineapple dressed as a pirate, upside down. With the camera zooming in on the unusual pirate pineapple, the TikTok creator appears to hesitate for a moment before knocking on the door.
The person inside the cabin then quickly opens the door, and that is when the video is cut off with a cliffhanger. The clip, which has been circulating across social media platforms, sparked comments about the peculiar practice.
Most reactions were of surprise, and some of curiosity. One user wrote: “When is Part two coming?!” Another shared: “My daughter & I were on the Arvia a few weeks ago, and one of the doors had two massive deflated pineapple upside down balloons on the door. My daughter had to explain why they were there.”
One commenter seemed to make a confession: “I go around on the first day of the cruise putting pineapple stickers on people’s doors. The interactions I’ve seen are hilarious”. The idea of playing pranks was a common theme, with another saying, “OMG the pranks you could play!” Yet another jokester shared their plans for future vacations, saying, “I’m gonna buy these stickers for my next holiday and stick them on random doors.”
However, not everyone was aware of the pineapple meaning, with one person expressing their relief: “I am so relieved that I didn’t know this was a thing.” Another commented, “Only found this out recently, been walking around with a pineapple keyring, and didn’t know!”
